When antiperspirants fail to do their job, this condition begins to cause discomfort and embarrassment. The appearance of stains on clothing and attempts to hide this fact often make people avoid normal movements.

The problem manifests locally, with the most sweat-prone areas of the skin being those with the highest number of sweat glands: feet, palms, and armpits.

In addition to psychological discomfort, hyperhidrosis can cause other unpleasant issues, such as yellow stains on clothing, damaged shoes, skin irritation, and unpleasant odor, as sweat provides a favorable environment for bacterial growth.

For many years, dermatologists have preferred to treat hyperhidrosis using botulinum toxin injections (Botox, Dysport). This method is chosen for its simplicity, maximum effectiveness, and virtually no side effects.

The mechanism of action of botulinum therapy to reduce sweating involves blocking the nerve impulses that go to the sweat glands. The neurotoxin inhibits the release of acetylcholine, a mediator that transmits signals from nerves to sweat glands, thereby reducing sweating.

Botulinum toxin-based medications do not enter the systemic circulation; they act only in the area where they are injected. The concentration of toxin in these drugs is so low that they have no negative impact on the patient’s body as a whole.

Preparation for the Procedure

To prepare for hyperhidrosis treatment in different areas, the following is recommended:

– Armpits: Remove hair with a razor. Do not use depilatory creams, wax, or laser removal to avoid irritation and inflammation on the skin;

– Feet: A pedicure is required to remove the horny layer of the epidermis, which will facilitate needle penetration into the skin;

– Palms: No special preparation is needed.

How the Procedure is Performed

Hyperhidrosis treatment is performed in a procedural office setting. Before starting, the doctor conducts the Minor test (iodine-starch test) to determine the area of greatest sweating. To avoid pain, a topical anesthetic is applied to the injection area. Botox or Dysport is injected using insulin syringes. The entire procedure takes 1-1.5 hours.

Effectiveness of Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Hyperhidrosis treatment is a single procedure. The effect of botulinum toxin begins to manifest 2-3 days after injection, with maximum results achieved within 14 days. It is important to understand that the treatment results in a reduction of excessive sweating, but does not stop it entirely. The period during which the sweat glands are blocked by Botox or Dysport is temporary. On average, it lasts from 3 to 12 months, after which sweating resumes. However, most patients who regularly undergo this procedure (once a year) note a reduction in natural sweating even after the full effect of botulinum toxin wears off.

Contraindications for the Procedure

Pregnancy and lactation;

Presence of malignant tumors in the body;

Presence of inflammatory processes in the treatment area;

Epilepsy;

Hemophilia;

During treatment with anticoagulants and antibiotics;

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug (botulinum toxin, albumin, lactose (for Dysport)).

Post-Procedure Care

After hyperhidrosis treatment, the following rules should be observed:

Refrain from using antiperspirants for 1-2 days after the procedure;

Limit intense physical activity that causes active sweating for a week after the injections;

Avoid all heat-related activities such as hot baths, saunas, baths, and solariums for 7 days.

Copying this text without a source link is prohibited

Hyperhidrosis is a fairly common problem that manifests as excessive sweating in certain areas of the body.
